NAIDOC Week 2019

This week, we have been celebrating NAIDOC Week at Peter Carnley Anglican Community School, following the NAIDOC committee's theme in 2019, Voice. Treaty. Truth. "Let’s work together for a shared future" - NAIDOC Week 2019 is held nationally from Sunday 7 July and continue through to Sunday 14 July. Due to this special week coinciding with students going on holidays, we celebrated it as a School the week prior.

Students engaged in celebrations and activities throughout the week to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.  Every class was alive with learning and students not only showed a deep respect for the natural environment when outside, they showed an acknowledgement of country.

  • The Moorditj Mob performances at each campus were much more than pure entertainment.  Our students learned Noongar vocabulary and about the Aboriginal culture.  The Moorditj Mob provided an interactive cultural experience that called for student and staff participation in both Junior and Senior School, all done in a respectful and enjoyable way
  • Years 2 and 3 classes practised aboriginal style artwork on boomerangs by studying artists' techniques and their clever use of vibrant colours
  • Year 2s also created a paper collage on a large Aboriginal flag and a large Torres Strait Islander flag and discussed the meaning of the symbols on each flag as well as researching 6 famous Indigenous Australians, creating posters of them in small groups
  • The Year 1 classes read and retold the Rainbow Serpent in a storyboard, created a whole class rainbow serpent, created a paper and salt dough rainbow serpent and learned how to count to 10 in Noongar
  • Year 2s created soundscapes which coincided with the Rainbow Serpent story
  • Year 4-6 learnt the Fremantle Dockers and West Coast Eagles theme songs in a Noongar language
  • Year 4 students worked alongside Tiahna and Donna Kelly to produce a beautiful artwork which will be displayed proudly at our school
  • Early Learning children became immersed in NAIDOC art, symbolism and dance.  The Outdoor Learning Day for Kindergarten to Year 1 on Thursday turned out to be a wet and stormy day.  However, this did not dampen the spirit of the day.  Cubbies were built indoors and Mrs Farmer lit the campfire under the veranda. Some classes produced videos and their own self-reflections on NAIDOC Week and what it means to them
  • Year 5 students engineered Mia-Mias using sticks, twigs and leaves from the bush play area, and then completed scientific experiments to determine which designs were most waterproof
  • In recognition of caring for the environment and respect for Country, Year 3M students hosted a Global Warming Fair on Thursday which was visited by staff and students from various year levels
  • The library ran a 2nd Hand Book Sale at the Calista and Wellard Campuses with all proceeds going to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation to provide books to children in remote areas of Australia. Staff were also provided with their own 2nd Hand Book sale.

These were only some of the many activities which took place at both Junior School and Senior School across both campuses.  Thank you to the students, parents, staff and visitors for their contributions and enthusiasm in making NAIDOC Week one of 'respect, understanding and knowledge.'
