Our School Mission is to challenge and inspire every member of our School community and to raise awareness of those who live in need beyond our gates. Building independence and capacity of our students is intertwined through classroom practices and our approach to pastoral care. These past two weeks have been highlighted by a number of opportunities for our students to be challenged and inspired. The Junior School Swimming Carnival was a great success, the Junior School Swimming lessons have commenced and the Senior School Swim Team are training hard for the upcoming ACC Interschool Swimming Carnival. The Year 7 Camp was held at Kerem Adventure Camp in Bullsbrook and the stormy weather created a number of challenges that the students took in their stride. Archery, team games, high ropes course and the climbing wall were amongst their activities finishing with Outback Splash. I was very impressed by their tenacity and willingness to give everything a go. The Year 9 students have embarked on The Rite Journey with the Calling and Departure ceremony being held on the Shoalwater foreshore in the company of parents and loved ones, where the students are encouraged to learn, reflect and look forward. My favourite part of this ceremony is the time spent with family members where they share memories of childhood as they prepare for the transformation to young adulthood.
International Women’s Day
Professor Fiona Wood certainly challenged and inspired our Year 10 to 12 girls at our International Women’s Day event. Joined by some of our past student leaders, Professor Wood described her life journey, her drive to become Western Australia’s first female plastic surgeon, her work as a burns specialist, and research and development including spray on skin used to save victims of the Bali Bombings. Describing herself as a Why kinda person, Fiona challenged the girls to be curious, to ask questions and to continually ask How do we get better? Sharing her life lessons; hard work, curiosity, self-belief and passion, Professor Wood encouraged the girls to work on their relationships, to walk past negativity and find those who support them to achieve their goals.
